Wisdom teeth are the four teeth that comprise our third set of molars. While our mouths, teeth, and jaws have carefully evolved as an interdependent system, wisdom teeth are the odd ones out. For many people, there simply is not enough room in our mouth for this last set of molars, which researchers believe are a relic of when we still ate raw, uncooked food that needed to be further mashed by our teeth. Do Your Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed?Wisdom teeth often do not easily fit in our modern jaws, leading to overcrowding issues. While some people experience no discomfort when their wisdom teeth come in, for many other people their wisdom teeth erupting may damage other teeth, or they may not even fully erupt. Besides causing discomfort, this can also make it easier for food to get trapped and decay to spread. If you are experiencing swollen and tender gums, jaw discomfort, or persistent gum disease, this may be due to wisdom teeth that failed to erupt properly. We will first perform a dental exam in order to determine if your wisdom teeth should be removed. Extracting Wisdom TeethThere are two different types of extractions. Both involve pulling the tooth from the gum tissue. The first type is a simple extraction. This involves using a local anesthetic and applying it to the gum tissue as well as the tooth to minimize sensation and pain. As it suggests, this procedure is straightforward. Our staff will simply move the tooth from the gum, using gentle pressure. The other type of extraction is called a surgical extraction. Though more involved, the same type of anesthetic is used. Most times, wisdom teeth removal requires a surgical extraction. With surgical extraction, the same numbing agent is used, and a precise incision is made at the gumline before the tooth is removed. In some cases, if the tooth is deeply embedded or impacted in the jawbone, it may have to be broken into smaller, more manageable pieces before extraction. Sedation dentistry can provide a relaxed atmosphere and adequate sedation to the patient so they can be relaxed while the surgical procedure is being performed. It typically takes a few days to fully recover from a wisdom tooth extraction. We will give you aftercare instructions.
