Root Canal Austin TX

Model of a root canal from Emily Ianno Zaramella, DDS in Austin, TXOur innermost part of the tooth, known as the pulp, has nerves and blood vessels that are crucial for tooth growth. The pulp can sometimes acquire an infection due to numerous reasons, including a leaky filling, chipping of the tooth, damage to teeth either due to decay or trauma. This is called dental pulp infection.

It is a painful condition with symptoms like sensitivity to hot and cold, inflammation, discomfort, pus, infected area becoming warm, red and swollen, tenderness, bad taste and breath, pain on biting, and a loose tooth. Risk factors of dental pulp infection can be tooth loss and abscess. Such a case can be unpleasant and may need immediate dental attention, and if not treated on time, the infection can spread to surrounding tissues. The root canal procedure is helpful in treating dental pulp infection cases. The symptoms mentioned earlier are all indications of a root canal procedure. At Emily Ianno Zaramella, DDS, we have dental experts who can assist you in such cases.

Procedure Of A Root Canal

Before beginning the procedure, our dentist shall take x-rays to check the extent of damage and any surrounding bone infections. Local anesthesia is given, and to keep the area saliva free, a rubber dam will be placed around the tooth by our dentist.

The tooth will then be cleaned using special dental cleaning tools, and the infected pulp, and the damaged part of the nerve, will be removed. This is done by creating an access hole in the tooth using a drill. Through this process, the insides of a tooth are entirely cleared up. The cleared area is then made germ-free to avoid any re-occurrence.

A sealing paste and rubber compound are placed in the cleaned area, and the access hole is sealed through fillings. Since the infected tooth acquired damage, it needs restoration. This restoration is done by placing a crown over the tooth. The crown helps in restoring the normal daily functions of the denticle.

Aftercare Of Root Canal

After a root canal procedure, specific care steps are to be followed to avoid any unnecessary damage. It is recommended to avoid hard, chewy, and sugary foods after a root canal procedure. Brushing your teeth in circular motions twice a day and flossing them once is recommended. Also, smoking should be avoided as it can cause damage to the tooth.

Re-occurrence of Dental Pulp Infection

A dental pulp infection may reoccur in some cases, particularly if any infected area went undetected during the previous procedure. Along with this, situations like incomplete cleaning, accessory canals, any delay in crown placement, and cavities may lead to recurrence.

Life Expectancy Of A Root Canal Procedure

A root canal is typically known to last for eight to ten years with proper care taken. Incidents like an accident, a blow to the upper or lower jaw, biting on hard foods, and chewing on things like pens, pencils, and bottles reduce the life expectancy of a root canal instantly may be a call for an urgent visit to the dentist.
